Getting started on world design

It was faster then I thought, but everything for the battle system's framework is just about done. Now I can get started on the real fun parts of the project, witch is getting to work on the over world. I mean i had one to begin with but really it was just a empty room with a basic character controller with debug options. Right now I'm kinda stuck as to what I want the game to really look like, right now my friends say it looks close to the MOTHER series, or Undertale/Deltarune.

And well, I don't mind it being called that with how battles would look in game play, I'm more inching closer to Persona/SMT (with some pieces of Yume Nikki and Omori along the way). Course looking at it now with how colorful it looks, that may be a little hard, but that's not the point. What matters for me at the moment on this topic is what style I really want to go for.  At first I wanted to do something like a 3D world with 2D sprites but I don't really have that type of codding knowledge to do something like that in game maker, I know its possible, buts its not within my abilities. Meaning I have to stick to a 2D world only.

this would've been simple to do in unity or Godot but:

1. Unity is a nightmare, and its already giving me a hard time before.

2. I already tried Godot before GameMaker, but I didn't really like using the engine.

I guess until I make art that I really like and fits with the world I have planned, I can rest easy knowing I got the hardest part out the way now.
